“It has been said that an elephant is a dog designed by a committee,” offers Father Jerry in today’s homily, “Most of us know the experience all too well: A group is brought together to complete a specific task or project. Everyone contributes their expertise and everything stays on course… until someone says, ‘You know, if we add this we’ll also accomplish that.” Then another idea. Then a tweak, and a suggestion, and so on, until the Cocker Spaniel has a trunk!
Jesus challenges that kind of dynamic in today’s Gospel. Over time, Israel’s covenant with God has been reduced to a legal contract, rather than the relationship between God and His people, based on justice and peace that it is meant to be.
